
25kV Substation and Distribution Line Design
Kanwar Engineering performed design, procurement, and construction support for a 25kV substation project located in Alberta. Originally, the utility company was tasked with building the substation; however, due to the complexity of the project, they decided not to proceed. Kanwar Engineering stepped in to deliver a comprehensive solution that includes electrical, civil, and structural design, procurement of major equipment, power system studies, and construction support.

The substation had a power transformer, zig-zag transformer, recloser, gang-operated air break disconnect switch, and protection and control systems. Zig Zag transformer was required to meet the utility's requirements, based on findings from the effective grounding and Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) study.

Scope of Work:

The following tasks were carried out to ensure the successful completion of the 25kV substation:

Electrical Design:
-
Design of the 25kV substation electrical system, ensuring compliance with utility standards and local regulations.

Design the zig-zag transformer integration to provide the necessary effective grounding and meet the required TOV standards.

Design protection and control systems, including setting up reclosers and gang-operated air break disconnect switches for system reliability and safety.

Civil and Structural Design:

Develop civil engineering designs for the substation’s physical layout, foundation, and grounding systems.

Design structural elements required for equipment placement, including the transformer pads, zig-zag transformer foundations, and other supporting structures.

Procurement of Major Equipment:

Procure the zig-zag transformer, recloser, gang-operated air break disconnect switches, and all other key components required for the substation.

Handle logistics to ensure timely delivery of all equipment to the project site.

Power System Studies and Protection Relay Settings:

Conduct a thorough analysis of the substation’s protection schemes, focusing on relay settings for system fault protection.

Perform power system studies such as short circuit analysis, effective grounding and TOV study, and protection coordination to ensure efficient and safe operation of the substation.

Develop protection relay settings tailored to the client’s system specifications.

Construction Support:

Provide support during the construction phase of the project.

Ensure all civil works, including foundations and grounding systems, are executed according to design standards.

Respons to construction RFIs on time.

Commissioning Support:

Assist in the commissioning process to ensure all systems are properly configured as per the design.
